I went to the Cruxshadows concert in Nashville last Sunday and was unsurprised to find that there were some soldiers there. CSX has become nearly as much a military band as Glenn Miller was in WWII.

One of the guys was a sergeant I'd previously talked with. He had done a couple of tours in the sandbox already and was preparing for another deploy.

During the concert I had to wonder something so I asked a question:

'I write about guys using music in battle but I've never had the chance to ask. Do you ever, like, pump yourself up to music before you know you're going to be in a firefight?'

He looked at me kind of funny then tapped his head.

"I keep my iPod right here on the side of my Kevlar. Whenever we're doing an entry, I play Citadel. And I sing it. And, yeah, I engage to the beat. Another guy in my team got into it and during an entry he got it shot off. He just started screaming the song as he cleared the room. I (blam) See! (blam) The! (Blam) Tempest! (Blam) at the gates! Four bad guys down that fast. Guys ask me about it and I just shrug. 'We sing music when we run, don't we?'"

That's sort of tightening up a conversation that took most of Sophia to complete.

Just thought it was interesting. I'd never been sure. Back when I was in the technology didn't really exist.

Re: Quick anecdote

Check out "Hed P.E." Couple of good 'kick ass' songs there. Same with Disturbed, though their political slant on a few of the songs is the wrong way around, Violence Fetish and The Sickness are decent 'can of whoopass' songs as well.

Re: Quick anecdote

We would rewire our CVC helmets to hear a Walkman or Discman. Discman didn't really work that well as the CD's kept skipping as the tank bounced along.

Plus we'd have to pause when using the radio. Nothing pissed the first sergeant off more than to hear music from a tank...

Re: Quick anecdote

I have quite a bit of music I like to listen to when responding code three or in pursuit of the crapulous.

Not supposed to rig iPods into the black and whites and the sound quality isn't the best, but the plug in radio transmitters do alright.

They also help with the boredom of traffic control jobs. Also known as blood money.

I like the new format as well... Just don't let it distract you from the next 'Oh No John Ringo, No!' moment.

Re: Quick anecdote

Congrats on the new site! Just keep on pluging away. BTW, any chance for Nessun Dorma from Turandot to make an appearance anywhere? Imagine an Admiral enjoying a wiskey while viewig mushroom clouds bloom over an Polseen infested planet. As the song builds to a cresendo, so do the sprouting mushrooms! Nothing says victory like Pavaroti and Vincero!

Re: Quick anecdote

Hah. I've figured out to use this thing.

I used to wear a walkman during patrols in Sinai. But that's a bit different from doing an entry.

But I'd decided that if I was ever having to do a hot drop, I was definitely going to be be listening to heavy metal on the way out the door.

Re: Quick anecdote

Once upon a few years ago, in Panama my Company, Bravo, of the 1st Battalion 508th was going through a MACO brief, followed by Prejump. The layout of the Battalion Area was such that during this joyous occasion someone was blasting music from Alpha Company’s building. The soldiers loved it. I can’t recall the music but it made for the best prejump I’d ever been through. It would seem grunts just execute PLF’s in a superior fashion when rock is playin in the background. Good memories. I’d not thought of that event in many years.

Re: Quick anecdote

When I do things, music helps me set a beat, keeps me focused. I say that having a beat can help in a lot of ways.
